To give Trainees the best opportunity to pass their exams it was agreed to design yearly rosters with exam preparation in mind. A 24-month roster design was developed and this split rural time and city time into distinct periods as follows:
6 months | rural rotations | PGY3 Medical (BPT2) |
6 months | city rotations | PGY3 Medical (BPT2) |
6 months | city rotations | PGY4 Medical (BPT3) |
6 months | rural rotations | PGY4 Medical (BPT3) |
The middle 12 months of metropolitan rotations gives Trainees the opportunity to attend lectures and have exposure to a large number of long and short cases of sufficient variety and complexity. It also provides the opportunity to be in familiar surroundings both at work and home and to also have support of family members during what can be a stressful period of training. Whilst we cannot offer 24-month contracts to trainees, the 24-month roster design is most beneficial to a trainee in its entirety. The Central North West Consortium has a staff retention rate of approximately 90%.
